Default Project - Charity Build- Narcolepsy UK

My son Connor is 12 and wishes to do something very unique to raise awareness of his conditions Narcolepsy and Cataplexy.

Quote:
What is Narcolepsy and Cataplexy?

Narcolepsy affects his energy levels, its referred to as ES (Excessive sleepiness ) meaning Connor has an overwhelming urge to sleep more often than average, The desire to sleep will overpower him and does frustrate him on occasion. This can and will happen involuntary on occasions such as watching movies, reading and mid conversation.

Cataplexy is the condition Connor does not tolerate very well. A Cataplexy attack is cost most often by laughter or other triggers included embarrassment fear or shocks
The severity of cataplexy varies for many sufferers, For some temporary weakness in facial muscles is common, Connor have a severe cases causing frequent collapses, this is very difficult for Connor naturally. Causing him extreme fear , not being able to move from seconds to minutes.

There are some other unpleasant symptoms such as hallucinations and sleep paralysis

Unfortunately Narcolepsy tends be difficult to diagnose, often is misdiagnosed as other similar conditions. Some cases have taken 10 years to confirm.

He is very mature an manages his conditions well. With a regular medication and a structured daily sleep plan. He does lead a relatively normal life. Naturally we hope that one day a cure will be found.

Project Background and Plan

We recently put a basic together using some old hardware we had laying around and various other parts that we given to Connor from
-friends
-family

Connor made the most of what he started with and added some nice mods the system.
The majority of the work including painting, design etc was all done by him.
Before

After(sorry for the low quality)

It was a huge success and we both had a lot of fun putting it together!

Quote:
He asked to do something that has made me (Dad) and Mum so very proud of Connor. As he approached the end of his first build, He asked if it was possible to do something similar, to raise funds for the sole Narcolepsy Charity in the UK. We talked it over and this what we planned

  • Build a complete PC from donated parts (Sponsorship)
  • Have Connor Customise it
  • Run a raffle and give one lucky supporter the machine at the end.
  • Raise as much awareness and understanding of Narcolepsy and Cataplexy as possible

I had doubts we could to make it work to be honest. I knew being well known or established would would have made it easier..but

We started with e-mailing the Sole Narcolepsy Charity in the UK

http://www.narcolepsy.org.uk/

They were thrilled and fully supported the project. They have most helpful, providing much needed advice to us regularly . They're currently promoting links to Connors Facebook Page and Donation page.

It was time to start sending out emails hardware manufactures, asking for sponsorship. To be honest we were blown when the replys starting flooding in. As time has passed the support he has received has blown us away!

Infact his initial target of a single machine was soon broken He has had enough sponsorship requests granted. Thanks too all the sponsors involved, Connor is now building, customising and giving away TWO Computers!

Like his personal Rig, The design and as much of work as possible will done by Connor. His Conditions will have an impact ,on the amount of work he can do & how often.

Now that would be telling...

OK then time to leave you a few images,Hopefully these keep you busy for a short time. If you do recognize them please don't spoil it for the rest

*

Facebook users may have already seen the revealed version of this image

And this one too. Not revealed . ..yet

Also we should have some new delivery's due this week or early next.

To clarify any questions regarding the donation Link and why it is not present (YET). The sole reason I have to yet to post is simple.

While I'm sure their will be many that would donate regardless of the specification of the Rig, I think it only fair for us to share all the sponsors and what they have offered first.

That way everyone knows exactly what they have a chance to win. We hope to have a complete list of parts soon. These things do take time .

We are extremely grateful for so many are making time for us. These companies/individuals have very demanding work loads. Its amazing what they are doing to aid this project.

Looks good
Good luck mate, I had a friend with Narcolepsy when I was younger. He always used to nod off or get heavy eyes and could see him really struggling in class and throughout the day. Used to be very annoying for him.

He grew out of it before we went to secondary school though and I hope its the same for your son!

Thanks for the kind words,

It is something Connor finds difficult ,though with the right daily plan and medication he tends to be fairly stable atm, He does often still have off days and it frustrate him as you mentioned like your friend

We have some news to announce in the coming days and if Connors is upto it we'll begin work this weekend

Sorry guys we didn't get any real work done this weekend.

The weather has been so nice and some overdue time with family took prioirty. Which was was needed after the amount of time me and Connor have spent on this project already.

We did managed to squeeze into a small amount of time to mock up a window cut for the case.

The Antec One is really nice case for the price. Just needed a little something we thought.

We've had a few shipments in the last few days and another due on Monday. This part list for this build minus a CPU is done now. Will update post one with system specs on Monday

The amount of things still announce is will blow your minds, Really need to keep pushing for a CPU support though
